Closure of Heart Holes:

Closing heart holes is crucial for treating congenital defects between heart chambers or atria. There are two main types:

  1. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD): Refers to holes between the atria.
  2. Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): Refers to holes between the ventricles.
Why Should It Be Treated?

Heart holes can lead to serious health issues such as strokes, heart attacks, or embolism in other organs due to clots entering systemic circulation. Therefore, once detected, these holes need to be closed.

Treatment Methods:

  1. Open Heart Surgery:

    • One of the traditional methods.
    • Typically preferred for large holes or complex cases.

  2. Minimally Invasive (Underarm) Method:

    • Performed through small incisions under the armpit or below the breast.
    • Advantages include:
      • Less bleeding
      • Lower risk of infection
      • Faster recovery process
      • Less pain and less psychological impact on the patient
      • Quick return to daily life
Surgical Process:
Post-ICU Care:
  • Patients typically stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) for one day.
  • During this time, they are closely monitored and usually moved to a regular ward the following day.
Ward Monitoring:
  • In the ward, post-operative drains are monitored and generally removed on the second day.
  • Patients are usually able to get in and out of bed without assistance during this period.
Discharge and Follow-Up:
  • After the ward monitoring, a hospital stay of 4-5 days is typically sufficient.
  • Upon discharge, patients are scheduled for a follow-up visit a week later.
  • During the first follow-up, stitches are checked and possibly removed, chest X-rays and blood tests are conducted, and medication adjustments are made.
Regular Check-Ups:
  • Patients should continue with regular doctor check-ups.
  • The next appointment is usually scheduled for one month after the first follow-up.

The procedure for closing heart holes can vary depending on the patient’s age, the size of the hole, and the patient’s overall health. Appropriate treatment options and processes should be determined by the doctors for each individual patient.
