Which aortic aneurysms can be repaired by angiography?

Aortic aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of the aortic wall. This enlargement occurs as a result of weakening or damage to the aortic wall. Aortic aneurysm can cause serious problems, depending on the severity of the disease and its location.  The aorta is usually divided into thoracic aorta (thoracic aorta) and abdominal aorta (abdominal aorta). Aneurysms in both regions can be treated with endovascular methods (angioplasty).

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is one of the methods used in the treatment of aneurysms. In order to repair the artery, a stent-graft is inserted into the aneurysm and the aneurysm pressure is reduced. The endovascular repair method does not require large incisions in the abdomen and chest, i.e. surgical intervention. Small incisions are made in the groin and the stent-graft is inserted into the ballooned aortic artery using a catheter. The insertion of the stent-graft is performed under angiography control.  The catheter is removed from the aorta and the stent-graft is inflated. This restores the normal flow of blood through the aorta.

Aortic aneurysms that can be treated by angioplasty or stent graft:

  1. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Abdominal aortic aneurysms occur in the abdomen. Abdominal aortic aneurysms, which usually do not show symptoms, also have the risk of bursting and causing internal bleeding. Such aneurysms can be treated with the endovascular stent graft method. Nevertheless, it is important that the aortic aneurysm is of a certain size, the severity of the disease and the general health of the patient are suitable for EVAR.
  1. Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm: Thoracic aortic aneurysm occurs in the chest. It has symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain. Thoracic aortic aneurysms can also be treated with endovascular methods. The size of the thoracic aorta, the characteristics of the aneurysm and the general health status of the patient will be decisive in determining the treatment method.

The endovascular stent graft method, in which the discharge and recovery process is faster, may not be suitable for all patients. The general health status of the patient, the size of the aneurysm, anatomical features, etc. are important in choosing the treatment method.
