Who Has Aortic Aneurysm More Frequently?

Aortic aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of the aorta, the main artery.

Aortic aneurysm can be seen in all age groups, especially in individuals over the age of 65. Some congenital and acquired factors may increase the risk of aortic aneurysm. Aortic aneurysms may be more common in some groups.  The groups at risk for aortic aneurysm can be listed as follows;

  • Elderly people The risk of aortic aneurysm is usually directly proportional to age, with the risk increasing with increasing age. Generally, the risk of aortic aneurysm is higher in people older than 65 years. The reason why it is more common in the elderly is that atherosclerotic changes (arteriosclerosis) increase in the aortic wall with age, which leads to aneurysm formation.
  • Men The risk of aortic aneurysm is higher in men than in women. In particular, aortic aneurysm occurs in 10% of older men and 1-2% of older women.
  • Smokers: Smoking is a risk factor for aortic aneurysm, as it is for most diseases. Smokers may develop atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) and eventually plaque formation on the artery walls. This leads to weakening and damage of the artery wall and thus to aneurysm formation. Therefore, aortic aneurysm is more common in smokers than non-smokers.
  • People with high blood pressure: When the artery cannot withstand abnormal levels of blood pressure, the wall of the aorta weakens and enlargement can occur as a result. Therefore, hypertension (high blood pressure) patients are one of the disadvantaged groups in terms of aortic aneurysm formation.
  • People with a family history of aortic aneurysm disease: People with a family history of aortic aneurysm are more likely to have the disease. Genetic factors can be decisive.
  • People with Marfan Syndrome and Other Connective Tissue Disorders: People with Marfan syndrome and similar connective tissue disorders have a higher risk of aortic aneurysm.

It is important that people with aortic aneurysm or in the above-mentioned groups have regular checks and tests. If the disease is diagnosed as a result of the controls and examinations, it is extremely important to consult your doctor and start the treatment process early before the disease progresses.
